Teboho and Joseph, two participating artists in the project, had teamed up for their research in the squatter camp area. Perhaps because they both lived near to Kliptown, they found it useful to do investigations together. Teboho had his own camera, and could take photographs of their encounters. Joseph is from Dlhamini, which is a few kilometres from the Walter Sisulu Square monument and Teboho lives in the newly built RDP [1] houses, as they are known. Teboho grew up outside of Soweto, but came to Soweto to study at Funda, and consequently moved to live in Kliptown. When Teboho first arrived in Kliptown he became familiar with several youth organisations in the area. For the field work component of our Cardboard Monument


[1] RDP, Reconstruction and Development Programme. A programme aimed at alleviating poverty and addressing the lack of social services in South Africa. Specifically known for its free housing plan. Houses are given for free to those who apply.
